Role Purpose: To develop, manage and coordinate group-wide programmes for energy and environmental management, including the development of strategies to meet the businesses’ current and future requirements. Supporting the businesses sustainability agenda, providing integrated support to all functions in understanding sustainability obligations, planning and implementing initiatives, monitoring and reporting results. And developing commercial opportunities arising from changing legislation and UK’s net zero ambitions.

 

 

 

This role will include the following responsibilities:

 

- Create a strategy for good energy and environmental management across the group, setting some high-level objectives and principles, in line with the business strategy and objectives

- Support the businesses sustainability agenda, providing integrated support to all functions in understanding sustainability obligations, planning and implementing initiatives, monitoring and reporting results

- Develop an Environment & Sustainability benchmarking strategy in conjunction with other ports and wider industry sectors

- Provide expert support on environmental incidents where escalation has been required

- Monitor and evaluate the Groups performance on energy and environmental issues, including budget performance and the delivery of relevant targets

- Audit Energy and Environmental performance across the group, identifying and tracking follow up actions

- Develop commercial opportunities arising from changing legislation and the UKs net zero ambitions

- Support the Environment Officer in developing our environmental programme, in line with the strategy, and maintaining an effective Environmental Management System for the group

 

Applicants interested in this role should ideally possess the following skills and experience:

 

- Proven experience in an environmental management role, managing compliance with UK environmental legislative requirements

- Exemplary understanding of sustainability/ESG reporting, benchmarking and assurance standards

- Proven ability, and confidence, to successfully engage with peers and senior leaders to gain buy-in for change

- Strong commercial awareness, and a keen understanding of the impact of long-term environmental risks and opportunities on the Groups business model

- An understanding of the Ports industry (or similar) is advantageous

- Excellent written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills

- Degree educated in a relevant discipline
