The Senior Manager Marine Operations role, within the Marine Department, will be responsible for delivering marine operations (24/7) for the Port of Liverpool, including Liverpool Container Terminal, and the Manchester Ship Canal.  These duties are also undertaken for the RORO division (including Heysham Port) on behalf of the Port Director/Duty Holder.


Responsibilities will also include:


- Define, communicate and deliver long term strategy for area of responsibility based upon the combined direction set by Port Directors and the Group Harbour Master.

- Lead and promote marine and navigational safety for the port area applying the powers of the Harbour Authority and in compliance with the Group Marine Safety Management System and Port Marine Safety Code.

- Lead positive customer engagement, and complaint/conflict resolution, to drive the highest standards of responsiveness and service, always balanced against wider commercial and statutory considerations and the optimisation of EBITDA.

- Deliver an effective pilotage service including the oversights of pilot training and pilot authorisation.

- Ensure statutory compliance with marine regulations, under delegated responsibilities from the Group Harbour Master, and appropriate levels of marine emergency preparedness, including maintenance of formal emergency, and oil spill response plans.

- Manage large operational OPEX budget accountable to the relevant Port Director.

- Ensure the provision of effective port control and dock/lock operation, with the appropriate designation (LPS/VTS), within area of responsibility. Ensure provision of conservancy such as buoyage, hydrographic survey and dredging

- Ensure that the marine operation contributes to, and enables, sustainable growth of the Company.



Skills and Experience


- Experience of running an operational team ideally within a technical, logistics or operational environment, and working under strict statutory/compliance frameworks.

- Knowledge of Port Marine Operations, experience working at Sea or in Shipping or as a Harbour Master or Deputy Harbour Master.

- Experience of managing high value operational budgets.

- Proven ability to form positive internal and external relationships, but not afraid to influence opposition and challenge if it’s in the Company interest or to enforce statutory obligations.

- A genuine desire to run a best in class harbour operation.

- IOSH Managing Safely would be advantageous.
